When I was a little girl in my father’s church, Palm Sunday was the day we had the egg hunt and sword fights with palm fronds.
When I got a little older, I understood the parallel of Jesus, being fully human and fully God, entered into Jerusalem to people shouting Hosanna and laying down the leaves for the donkey to walk on. That this was prophesied hundreds of years before His birth.
The week referred to as Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday. In just a week, the people who were praising His name, flooding the streets with praise and honor, shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” And the next week they will be screaming, “Give us Barabas!”
As we enter this week, let’s remember the Joy of our Salvation. Lets us remember the sacrifice of the arrest, beatings, and the crucifixion and the glorious Resurrection!
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Matthew 21: 9-11 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “ Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
How difficult it must have been hearing these shouts knowing that in a few days the would be shouting for Him to be put to death.
This week reflect on both the praise and the vitriol. How humble and yet how much Love and Compassion He displayed. Reflect on the sacrifice that brought about our Redemption and Salvation.
Be blessed on your journey with Jesus.
