Trying A New Hair Color #21

On my journey of Sixty New Things Before I turn 60, I have looked for things that I’ve wanted to do but have not done before.

This is one of those things. Or should have been. It was a fully thought out attempt. But it did not go as planned…as it is want to do.

Here is what happened. I wanted to color my hair. During Covid, I let it go from the Light Ash Blonde that I had been highlighting my fading blonde hair with for thirty some years. It was kind of liberating, especially since there was still some blonde, a little gray but a lot of white.

So, I thought let’s add a wild hair color to my list!

I found a temporary mask from Wella and thought that would be the best option to try first some lavender colored hair. I got latex gloves, and a rat tail comb too. I was prepared!

I got my old towels to use, because hair dye… purple hair dye, it’s going to be messy. It really wasn’t.

I followed the directions, wash your hair, lightly towel dry, add the color mask, wash again after 8-10 minutes to rinse your hair, then dry and style.

I was not playing around. I am not 10 and this is not Sun-In!

I was so excited. Until I wasn’t.

You have heard of the test strand, right? I have never, ever, in my life done a test strand. Not with Sun-In, not with boxes of Clairol, L’Oreal, or Garnier. Especially not back in the ‘80s when I used KoolAid or water colors or the Pazzazz by Clairol in Touch of Gold or Touch of Rose mousse. And I used the heck out of that Pazzazz! Feel free to clip that coupon over there. 😁

But I thought to myself, while blow drying my hair in disbelief, maybe test strands are a pretty good idea.

I knew that gray and white hair have challenges when it comes to color. So, I decided that it would be best to leave it on a little longer. I watched like 10 videos about this product and anyone who had baby fine hair, that was poker straight did like 5 extra minutes so I decided 20 minutes was my magic number.

The color of this mask is Lilac Frost, a shimmery, pearlessent, soft lilac. Perfect! It was dark coming out of the tube and even thought I have thin, baby-fine hair; I still used like 1/2 the tube, I wanted every bit coated.

Are you ready for the result?!?

Tag – Dah! Lilac Frosted Hair!

Well, the gray is gone. So is the blonde. And that yellow cast that sometimes shows up. It is all frost and no lilac.

Welp, it was a new experience for me, for sure! Coloring my hair purple to have it turn out all white. Yup, that’s new.

The goal is 60 new things before I turn 60 and I have 39 more to go and I can’t wait!
