Authority?

On what subject(s) are you an authority?

Is any one truly an authority on anything?

I have heard people introduced as “ the leading authority on XYZ” or “the world’s foremost authority on…” and the popular “an authority on the effects of…”

But me?

None.

Zero subjects.

Well, maybe my kids, I love my kids, and once upon a time, I was an authority on them.

Not anymore tho, really.

They are adults now, with mortgages, spouses, 1 kiddo, and 3 fur babies.

I was an expert on their likes or dislikes when they were little. I used to know their favorite foods, TV shows, video games, what pajamas were their favorite, how one liked their back rubbed at bedtime and the other liked to have their hair stroked.

Now, the things I know for sure are:

1) My kids are filled with love

2) They are happy

3) My son is a Disney adult, my daughter loves it too but not as mush as my son

4) They care about people, the world, society, they will go out of their way help someone.

5) Each in their own way have a relationship with God

6) My daughter loves camping and hiking, my son likes outdoors if it is a theme park.

7) They are both intelligent people and work things out quickly

8) They call to check on me, sometimes daily, “because that’s what you do for old people”

9) They are VERY loyal

10) My kids are truly good people, and fill me with joy when I see the lives they built for themselves.

Maybe it’s still there, the knowledge doesn’t have to be about pajamas, macaroni and cheese, bedtime routines or Power Rangers, but because they came from me, because they are still my babies, because I knew them before they came to be.

I guess maybe I’m still an authority on the subject of my children. That fact makes me smile.

About Me

My name is Susan and I turned 59 this week. I was not thrilled about this age or the one that would be coming up next. One celebratory post on social media that included a link, inspired me to try 60 new things or experiences before I turn 60 in 2025. Join me on this journey as I view these adventures through a dirty windshield.

Susan is a mom of 2, grandmother of 1 and owned by 1 dog. Currently living in the Denver, Colorado metro area.
